Hukam 10 – Recognise Satguru Granth Sahib Ji As The Eternal Guru

In Hukam #9, Guru Sahib tells us to focus our consciousness on the true form of the SatGuru (true Guru). In this 10th Hukam, to prevent confusion & duality, Guru Sahib has told us plainly who our SatGuru is. Our SatGuru is Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj, the King of Kings. What does it mean for us to have a SatGuru? ਮੋਹਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਭਇਓ ॥ I have become sad, ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਆਇ ਕਹਾ ਗਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Wondering where the soul comes from, and where it goes. ||1||Pause|| (Bhagat Kabir, Ang 870) Having the True Guru means to be told of things that we would otherwise have no clue about. Guru Sahib give us the gift that is the name of God and they teach us how to meditate on God with devotion. Through Naam, we can meet God in the current moment while at the same time obtaining spiritual powers many saints of the past have been blessed with. To accept Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as your SatGuru does not mean to just ‘matha tek’. It means to accept the teachings to be 100% true and being prepared to apply them to your life. When we have reached the state of mind that we want to progress In Sikhi, all of the answers are there. This is a SatGuru that is unaffected by lust, greed, attachment, anger and ego - completely free of all sin and here to deliver us from sin. We have to become the kind of GurSikh that actively want to move forward and not adopt this ‘whatever will happen will happen’ attitude that we seem to have. This attitude will get us nowhere. While it is true that God wills for all things to happen, they do not happen on their own. There is an element of free will in absolutely everything. We physically have to make the changes required to move forwards - whether that be to allocate 15 minutes a day to do Naam Simran or stop cutting our Kesh. We must continually take steps forward and grow our Gursikhi. When we begin to apply the changes to our lives, we can reap the benefits. The SatGuru is ultimately there to shine a light on the path that ends with the Lord and Creator of the Universe. The teachings of the SatGuru are applicable to all, we just have to maintain an open mind & be prepared to change in order to appreciate the jewels contained within. The beauty of our Satguru is that they teach us to fall in love with God. It is not about liberation at all; everything we do in Sikhi is for the love of God (Waheguru). Spend some time falling in love with your Guru and see what happens. ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸਿਮਰਹਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਤੈ ਤਨਿ ਉਡੈ ਖੇਹ ॥ That body, which does not remember the Lord's Name in meditation in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, shall be reduced to dust. ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਫਿਟੁ ਅਲੂਣੀ ਦੇਹ ॥੧॥ Cursed and insipid is that body, O Nanak, which does not know the One who created it. ||1|| (Guru Arjan Dev, Ang 553)
